The airport needed regular access to service its Instrumented Runway Visual Range (I-RVR) system, which provides pilots with real-time visibility data in poor weather. Located in a remote grassed area, the I-RVR is serviced weekly, but persistent rain since November had left the ground impassable, even for 4x4 vehicles.
A quick, safe and cost-effective access solution was required to prevent disruption.

A team of two installed 3m-wide aluminium roadway panels in just a few hours, with a turning circle at the far end so vehicles could drive through without reversing.

“There were several challenges and concerns that needed to be addressed. As always in aviation, the safety of aircraft is paramount. TPA responded promptly to all requests and were able to accommodate night works around commercial operations.”
Extending the hire to support busy summer traffic
Originally planned to be in place until April, the 50m track was so effective that the airport chose to extend the hire through summer. This ensured uninterrupted access during peak travel months while a permanent track is planned.
Michael added:
“We have found the temporary track to be an excellent solution. I found the whole experience to be swift, professional and flexible. If ever I need a temporary roadway, I wouldn’t look anywhere else.”
